2021 Maritime RC Racing: RedClay Rumble

The RedClay RC Racing Club held the RedClay Rumble on July 11, 2021 at the Great Hobbies offroad track which is located behind the Great Hobbies location in Stratford, PEI. The race actually had to be rescheduled to the Sunday rain date because of tropical storm Elsa which soaked the track late Friday and early Saturday morning. The track crew, lead by Kevin Cake and David Praught, got the track back in tip top shape for the race. Local racers commented that the track was in the best condition they have ever raced on with the rain from the day before keeping the track damp with good grip!

The morning of the race was very sunny and humid. David McKenna took control of the race director duties and registered 18 drivers, from the 3 maritime provinces, across 5 classes which filled each of the classes with an A & B main. The the 3 qualifying rounds and single main finals progressed at a good pace until the last main was run about 6:00pm. We welcomed 6 Rookies to the Maritime RC Racing family, who attended their first MRCR regional race!

Thanks to all racers who attended and made it a great day, to the RedClay RC Race Club for hosting the event, and for the race sponsors: Great HobbiesKrawler Konceptz, and Maritime RC Racing !!!

2wd SCT A-Main: RESULTSVIDEO

1st: Derek Bain, 2nd(tq): David Praught, 3rd: Scott Watson

2wd SCT is a popular class at RedClay, with enough racers for an A & B main. At the start of the A-Main there was a big crash in the first corner that shuffled the pack. Derek Bain was able to work his way through the field on the first lap to take the lead and he would hold this lead to the finish. Scott Watson, who won the SCT B,  had an early battle with David McKenna before Scott would take the 2nd spot. Little did Scott know, David Praught was working his way back through the pack after a slow start. By mid-race David would move into 3rd with his eyes on the 2nd position. There was some very good close racing between David and Scott, and on the penultimate lap (2nd to last) David pulled off this signature move and passed Scott in the infield chicane to grab 2nd, while Scott fought for 3rd.

1st(bump): Scott Watson, 2nd: Niels de Ronde, 3rd: Kevin Cake

The winner of the 2wd SCT B-main would bump to the A, so the pressure was on to do well! At the start of the race Niels De Ronde would jump to the lead in hopes to win the main. Scott would quickly recover and retake 1st, while Niels would fall to 3rd after a roll at the end of the straight. Niels would have a quick battle with Boyd Newman and was able to retake 2nd. Through the race Kevin Cake would recover from a slow start, and make his way steadily through the field to take 3rd. The race ended with Scott taking 1st and the bump to the A with Niels finishing 2nd and Kevin 3rd.

2wd Buggy A-Main: RESULTSVIDEO

1st(tq): Gregg Lawton, 2nd: Glen Gorveatt, 3rd: David Praught

2wd Buggy was one of the largest classes at the event with 15 entries and an 8 car final. This race started very clean, with most of the cars able to navigate most of the track on the first lap with no problems. About 2/3rds of the way in the first lap there was a huge pileup at the triple where a car tried to double it and flipped, causing a chain reaction that shuffled the pack. Gregg Lawton, David Praught, and Glen Gorveatt were able to make the most of the situation and were able to get a clean first lap to lead the race. David would have trouble in the doubles at the end of the straight which allowed Glen to get by into 2nd while David fell to 3rd. The top 3 would hold this order to finish with Gregg 1st, Glen 2nd, and David 3rd. Notable was Anthony Bond, who had worked his way to 4th from 7th, but was forced to retire early with mechanical problems. Also notable was Evan Osborne who finished 6th after his 8th place start in the A.

2wd Buggy B-Main: RESULTSVIDEO

1st(bump): Evan Osborne, 2nd: Kevin Cake, 3rd: Niels De Ronde

The winner of 2wd Buggy would bump to the A, and this lead to one of the closest races in the event! 8 cars would start the B main, and a slight crash in the first series of jumps would shuffle the pack a bit. Kevin Cake would hold his start spot and get through the first lap clean and keep 1st. Evan would improve to 2nd, with his eyes on the prize. Evan would tail Kevin for a few laps, but then Kevin had a problem getting tangled with other cars which allowed Evan to grab the 1st spot. Evan was more consistent, but Kevin was slightly faster. The race would go right to the last corner with Kevin catching right up to Evan as they entered the straight for a drag race to the finish line. When the dust settled Evan held first, Kevin charged to 2nd, and Niels improved his 4th place start to finish 3rd with a smooth run!

4wd Buggy A-Main: RESULTSVIDEO

1st: David(Ben) McKenna, 2nd: Glen Gorveatt, 3rd: Luke MacAusland, TQ: William Muirhead

4wd Buggy is a growing class with the RedClay drivers, and the largest class at the event! The A-Main had an 8 car final. At the tone the first lap started with some position changes but no big pile ups. Kevin Cake got the best lap moving from 5th to 1st! William Muirhead got the worst lap falling from 1st to 8th with some troubles with the jumps and needing a marshal. Kevin ran clean through the first half of the race to hold 1st, but Glen Gorveatt and David McKenna we quickly gaining. Kevin did well setting the pace until an unfortunate flip in the doubles on the end of the straight which allowed David and Glen to sneak by. David would then take the lead and hold the position to the end. William, who had the horrific start, would work his way steadily through the pack to move back into 2nd late in the race with Glen running 3rd. Unfortunately for William, a last lap bobble would cost him a podium spot. The race ended with David finishing 1st, Glen finishing 2nd, and Luke MacAusland recovered from a bad start to finish 3rd.

4wd Buggy B-Main: RESULTSVIDEO

1st(bump): David Praught, 2nd: Evan Osborne, 3rd: Scott Watson

The 4wd Buggy class was hugely popular, and the B-Main had a 9 car final with the winner bumping to the A. At the tone there was a bit of a crash in the first turn doubles to mix up the field. Evan Osborne and David Praught jumped to a slight lead over the rest of the field and raced close the rest of the race. David was slightly faster, with Evan slightly more consistent. As David would gain on first place any slight bobble would give Evan more breathing room. This continued through the whole race until the last lap where David pulled off his signature move of the infield chicane pass for 1st, with Evan settling for 2nd. In 3rd, Cory McCormick held 3rd for 3/4 of the race until Scott Watson made the pass and took 3rd!

4wd SCT A-Main: RESULTSVIDEO

1st: Gregg Lawton, 2nd: Glen Gorveatt, 3rd: William Muirhead, TQ: David McKenna

4wd SCT is a popular class in the Maritimes, and the 4wd SCT A-Main had a field of 6 drivers. Due to a mix up the TQ racer (David) had to borrow a truck to run in the A-Main, which would prove to be quite a challenge. On the first lap there was some slight contact at the start which shook up the field, but the racers settled down for some close battles. Up front Gregg and Glen pulled away from the rest of the field in some nice close racing. Glen made a few challenges for the lead but Gregg was able to hold him off. Glen had an unfortunate roll with the pipe before the straight and then he fell into the clutches of William and David. William had passed David for 3rd, and he had his eyes set on 2nd. Glen and William fought close for several laps but Glen was able to drive under pressure and was able to pull away for a little breathing room from William. The race finished with Gregg 1st, Glen 2nd, and William 3rd. David had an electrical problem on the last lap keeping him from making a charge to the podium.

4wd SCT B-Main: RESULTSVIDEO

1st(bump): Derek Bain, 2nd: David Praught, 3rd: Luk MacAusland

The winner of the 4wd SCT B-Main would bump to the A, so the racers gave it their best to get in the show. The start of the race was near perfect through the first corner. Derek Bain proved to be unstoppable this race, he was able to get out front early and ran consistently to capture the 1st and the bump to the A. The battle for the 2nd spot on the podium turned out to be very fun to watch. Early on David Praught would improve from his 3rd place qualifying to take 2nd spot briefly. David found himself needed a marshal after a flip in the doubles which allowed Niels De Ronde to step into the 2nd spot. Niels was running some smooth and consistent laps until he found himself needing a marshal in the infield chicane, which allowed Luke MacAusland to inherit 2nd. Luke was running some good laps and was getting comfortable in the 2nd spot until the last lap, when out of nowhere David Praught made an incredible pass in the triple to re-take 2nd and with no time on the clock the race ended with Derek 1st, David 2nd, and a surprised Luke 3rd.

1/8 E-Buggy A-Main: RESULTSVIDEO

1st: Dario Paoletti, 2nd(tq): William Muirhead, 3rd: Luke MacAusland

The 1/8 Buggy A-Main was run with 6 racers in the main. The start of the race went very well and everyone got away clean! Dario was a man on a mission! He got the holeshot and pulled into first and lead the race from the tone to finish 1st. On the first lap William had the funniest flip in the triple section we’ve seen in a while, worth the watch! William had been running strong until the flip, which bumped him down to 3rd. David Praught moved to 2nd momentarily until a flip in the triple on the next lap moved him back to 6th with a long road ahead to the podium. Hard charging Derek Bain moved into the 2nd spot to try his hand. He was running well until the triple bit him as well, which allowed William to pass and retake 2nd. William pulled right to the back of Dario to challenge for the lead. An unfortunate flip in the plow discs after the triple allowed Dario to pull away for some breathing room. As the clock sounded Dario finished 1st, William in 2nd, and Luke moved into 3rd after a great back and forth battle with Derek.

1/8 E-Buggy B-Main: RESULTSVIDEO

1st(bump): David Praught, 2nd: Kevin Cake, 3rd: Niels De Ronde

The 1/8 Buggy B-Main had 7 drivers all fighting for the win and the coveted bump to the A-Main. At the start there were a lot of issues happening in the first corner which shuffled the field, which allowed new racer Steve Frizzell to lead the field through the first lap. The stress of leading the race would prove to be too much and he would fall back to 7th on the very next lap. Niels De Ronde would then lead the field around for a lap until an unfortunate flip in the triple would allow Cory McCormick  to sneak by to lead the race! Not to be outdone, David Praught would make another incredible pass in the triple section to grab the lead from Cory! Cory would settle in to 2nd for a few laps, but would need a marshal which allowed Kevin Cake to get by for 2nd, and Niels to move into 3rd. There was some nice clean driving for the remainder of the race with David finishing 1st for the bump spot, Kevin finishing 2nd, and Niels finishing 3rd.
