2018 Quebec Onroad Nationals

The 4th annual Quebec Onroad Nationals was held April 27-29 2018. The Quebec Nationals is held at the permanent facility of the Circuit Teleguide Saint-Hyacinthe club in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, which is about 30 minutes east of Montreal. The quality of the racers who attend this event is second to none, and making an A-Main is definitely quite a feat. 4 racers from the Saint John RC race club in NB attended the event to do their best to make the podium: Gregg Lawton, Kyle McKinnon, Mark McKinnon, and Jeremy Sherriff.

The event starts with a full day of practice on Friday, followed by 3 rounds of qualifying on Saturday and an additional qualifying round on Sunday followed by the Mains.

Mark McKinnon: Qualified 2nd – Finished 5th

Mark qualified 2nd for the 21.5 B-Main after an intense qualifying session. At the start of the race Mark slipped a bit from the leader while he was getting a feel of the track that had changed from the qualifying sessions. After about 5 laps in Mark begins to gain on the leader but has an unfortunate crash in front of the drivers stand where he lost a few positions. He continued with a solid run but was unable to make up the lost ground.

Kyle McKinnon: qualified 5th – finished 8th, Jeremy Sherriff: qualified 6th – finished 6th

Kyle and Jeremy qualified into the A-Main of the TC 21.5 class. At the buzzer Kyle had a terrible crash into the barrier in the first corner that put him down into 8th. A few laps after that another bump with a corner dot put him just far enough back that he could not catch up to the cars ahead.

Jeremy also had troubles at the start at the end of the sweeper where it looks like a car spun him out on corner entry and he fell to 7th. Jeremy was able to keep with the 5th and 6th cars as they ran a clean race. At about the 3/4 time in the race, the 6th place car went wide into the sweeper and Jeremy was able to run the inside line to take the spot back and he finished with the 6th spot.

Gregg Lawton: qualified 7th, finished 6th

At the start of this USGT A-Main race there were a few bobbles made by some other racers, and after a few laps Gregg found himself running in 5th spot chasing down the 4th place car. At about the 1/2 mark of the race, the leader came by for a lap and the 6th place car followed through to take 5th and Gregg fell to 6th. At about the 2/3 mark of the race the 7th place car was putting a lot of pressure on him for the spot, but an unfortunate tumble by the 7th place car ended up breaking and fell to 8th ending his run. Gregg made a slight run at 5th but never really challenged for the position so he held the spot for 6th improving on his qualifying position.

Kyle McKinnon: qualified 4th – finished 3rd, Gregg Lawton: qualified 5th – finished 4th, Mark McKinnon: qualified 7th – finished 7th

Kyle, Gregg, and Mark qualified into the 17.5 C-Main which was no easy feat

Kyle was able to take the 3rd spot after about 3 laps in when the the racer in 3rd went wide in the infield leaving enough space for Kyle to squeeze through. From there he was able to build enough of a gap he would take 3rd and a place on the podium.

Gregg held his 5th place spot until about the 1/2 way mark when the 4th place racer had trouble on the straight and Gregg was able to go by. Gregg then set his sights on Kyle in 3rd and was able to catch up within feet but was unable to mount much of a charge and settled for 4th, improving from his qualifying position.

Mark was having a good back and forth battle with the 6th place car until about 1/4 of the way into the race, where he had an unfortunate traction roll into the straight and 6th was able to pull away into the field. A body tuck at the 1/2 way mark of the race sealed the 7th spot.

Jeremy Sherriff: qualified 8th – finished 8th

Jeremy worked hard and did his best in the qualifiers to qualify in the 8th spot in the 17.5 B-Main. In the race he was able to jump up into 7th early in the race. He held it until mid-way where he had a bad lap and 8th was able to get by and reclaim 7th. He kept on having a strong run until the 3/4 point where a freight train of leaders went by and he lost precious time. He was unable to make up  the lost time and he finished in the 8th position he started.
