Cap-Pele 2018 Offroad Series #4

The 4th race of the Cap-Pele 2018 series was held on August 25th, 2018. The turnout was great with a lot of new first time racers from NB and a large contingent of racers from PEI! This gave enough racers to run A&B mains in 2wd Buggy, 2wd SCT, and 4wd SCT. Unfortunately there were also some core members who had to miss the race so we were unable to run the nitro classes due to the lack of entries in those classes.

The day started very warm and sunny, without a hint of wind. The day stayed sunny and quite hot with just a slight wind by the end of the day. The track started damp from a good watering the night before. Then George/Dario watered the track after round 1 and before the Finals which helped with grip and helped to keep the dust down for the day so that seemed to improve racing conditions.

Plaques were provided by 333 Customs, Timcards/Subway cards provided by Revolution Raceway, and Freedom Hobbies provided 10x $10gift certificates to the racers! The results from this race will be added to the overall series points.

2wd Buggy A-Main – RESULTS

1st: Mark McKinnon, 2nd(TQ): Gregg Lawton, 3rd: Dario Paoletti

In this class we welcomed Shawn Hume from PEI, and Cody Porter in his first ever off road race day. This race started with a horrific crash in the first turn sweeper and then smaller incidents throughout the first lap shuffled the field. After a few laps the field sorted out for some close racing in all positions. Gregg, Mark, and Shawn got the best start and pulled away from the field just slightly. Kyle was able to overtake Shawn for 3rd and the race seemed to settle down. Gregg had an unfortunate flip and Mark was able to get by and Mark held that for the win. Gregg and Kyle had a few touches which slowed their progress for 2nd. Dario was able to pass Kyle for 3rd during that battle.

2wd Buggy B-Main – RESULTS

1st: Mark Baird, 2nd: Jason Sullivan, 3rd: Cody Porter, 4th William Muirhead, 5th Zack Bernard

This race was a battle for the top 4 positions that would move up to the A-Main. In the first lap Zack would have a bad lap and he had a hard time recovering. Mark Baird overcame a rough qualifying session to jump to the lead, where he and Jason would exchange the top spot. Cody would drive a consistent final and held 3rd throughout the race.

2wd SCT A-Main – RESULTS

1st(TQ): KyleMcKinnon, 2nd: Dario Paoletti, 3rd: Eric D’amours

In this race Shawn Hume and Derek Bain would make their debut race in the 2wd SCT final. The race for 1st/2nd was a bit closer than the chart shows. With the slippery conditions those 2 drivers ran about 10 feet apart challenging for the win. It finished with Kyle in the lead with Dario in 2nd. The race to watch was for 3rd between Shawn and Eric. Not shown on the chart was on the final lap Eric collided with a truck just after the Start/Finish line and Shawn made the pass for 3rd. With the pressure on, Eric caught up and made the perfect inside line pass close to the doubles by the road to get 3rd back and he was able to hold the position the rest of the track being closely pressured by Shawn.

2wd SCT B-Main – RESULTS

1st: William Muirhead, 2nd: Brouno Hachey, 3rd: George Thompson, 4th Chris Flewelling, 5th Zackary Murphy, 6th Sam Cormier

In 2wd SCT we welcomed new racers Brouno Hachey, Zackary Murphy, and Sam Cormier. In this B-Main race the racers were battling for a top 4 finish to bump up to the A-Main. William lead the class with a solid 1st place finish. the lap counter wasn’t picking him up well so his position changed in the counting system, but he finished well ahead of the other racers. Brouno had a solid race to finish 2nd. George had the BQ, fell to 5th, and came back to 3nd. Chris had a steady race and recovered from a bad flip to finish 4th.

4wd SCT A-Main – RESULTS

1st: Gregg Lawton, 2nd: Dave Heacock, 3rd: Shawn Hume, TQ: Dario Paoletti

In this race we saw Shawn Hume from the PEI club qualifying directly into the A-main in his first race to the Cap-pele track. This race had a large field of 11 drivers in the final. At the start of the race Gregg was able to make the pass on Dario for 1st, but Dario was able to make the pass back a few laps after. A mechanical failure a few laps after took Dario off the track and Gregg assumed the lead to finish 1st. With a podium spot open Shawn and Dave moved into 2nd and 3rd. Shawn couldn’t hold off Dave, and Dave finished 2nd with Shawn finishing 3rd. An item of note is this race had a lot of position changes mid-pack/mid race.

4wd SCT B-Main – RESULTS

1st: William Muirhead, 2nd: Brouno Hachey, 3rd: Jason Sullivan, 4th: Derek Bain

In this class we welcomed new racer Will Coohen to his first ever race on the track. Also, more experienced racers Brouno and Derek were running in their first time to the track. The top 4 in this race would move on to the A-Main. In the first few laps there were a few crashes that shuffled the field. William and Brouno were able to take advantage and finish 1st and 2nd. Jason Sullivan had a rough start but was able to work his way back to get the 3rd spot. Mark Baird and Derek Bain had a last lap battle for the 4th and final bump spot, with Derek able to pull it off and move up.

1/8 Buggy A-Main – RESULTS

1st(TQ): Dario Paoletti, 2nd: Shawn Hume, 3rd: Chris Flewelling

In this race there was 3 first time racers to the Cap-pele track: Shawn, Derek, and Brouno. Dario got a good start in the race and held the lead from the tone. On the 1st lap Derek fell from the 2nd qualifier position to 5th and struggled through the race to get back on the podium. Shawn and Chris jumped into the available podium spots. Shawn would hold the 2nd spot to the finish tone, but Chris fell from 3rd to 5th allowing Dave to take 3rd. By the mid-point of the race, Chris was able to recover and take back the position, finishing 3rd on the podium.

1/8 Truggy A-Main – RESULTS

1st: Chris Flewelling, 2nd(TQ): Dave Heacock, 3rd: William Muirhead

In this class we were missing a few of the series racers, which was an opportunity for the racers to get some good finishes for the series points. At the start of the race William was able to grab the quick lead, which he held until he made a mistake and needed a marshal. This allowed Chris to jump to the lead and he held it to the finish. William was able to recover to 2nd for a short time until Dave was able to take the spot from him and finish in 2nd 10 seconds behind the leader. William just got caught at the line for the extra lap and finished in 3rd.
