2019 Cap-Pele Revolution Raceway – Summer Series #5

The 5th race of the 6 race Cap-Pele Revolution Raceway series was held Sept 21st, 2019. The turnout was slightly less than average, with a heat of all classes and enough for an A & B in 4wd SCT.

Fall was in the air and the day started at about 18 degrees and quite windy. The track had been washed out / eroded by a hurricane that came through on the previous week. Jump faces were initially a mess but with a little footwork by racers a few of the jumps became usable for doubles. The wind died down through the day, and by final time the wind was reasonable with some cloud cover.

At the end of the race there were $60 in gift certificates from Freedom Hobbies, $200 in certificates from RCMart, and Tim Hortons and Subway provided by Revolution Raceway. The results of this race are added to the Overall Series Points.

2wd Buggy A-Main: RESULTS

1st(tq): Mark McKinnon, 2nd: Gregg Lawton, 3rd: Kyle McKinnon

Mark McKinnon worked on his setup through the day and it paid off with a great TQ run in Q3. At the tone the large field of 11 cars raced through the first corner, only to be involved in a 6 car pileup in front of the scoring booth. Mark and Dario made it through pileup #1 to gain a bit of a lead. The race continued past the first set of doubles, but in the 2nd set of doubles another large pileup claimed another 6 cars. Mark and Dario also made it through pileup #2 and now were pulling to an even larger lead. Gregg also was able to get by pileup #2 and began to chase down the lead pair. After 4 laps Gregg was able to catch and pass Dario for 2nd with his eye on 1st, but at this point Mark had built up a 1/3 of a lap lead over the group. During this time Kyle would drive hard to catch both Dario and Gregg to secure 2nd for himself. Kyle looked to have 2nd in the bag but he caught a rut on the final lap which allowed Gregg to move into 2nd. When the lap ended Mark finished comfortably in 1st, Gregg coasted to 2nd, while Kyle charged to 3rd.

2wd SCT A-Main: RESULTS

1st(tq): Kyle McKinnon, 2nd: George Thompson, 3rd: Derek Bain

In 2wd SCT, Kyle had the hot setup and lead the race from the tone to finish 1st, following the racer in 2nd. The battle in this race was between George and Derek, who would follow each other closely through the race, neither wanting to lessen their grip on the 2nd spot. Initially in the race the two would trade the spot back and forth like a game of hot potato. Derek would have a long lap at lap 6, and this would give George the opportunity to gain the 2nd place spot, and the space to keep it just out of Derek’s reach. The race would end with Kyle 1st, George 2nd, and Derek 3rd. Of note in this race was Jesse testing a new prototype mid-motor 2wd slash making its debut at the track. Lots of tuning was done on it during the day and it seemed to be working much better in the final, showing glimpses of the handling Jesse was looking for.

4wd SCT A-Main: RESULTS

1st(tq): Gregg Lawton, 2nd: Dario Paoletti, 3rd: Gordon Mercer

4wd SCT was a well contested event this week. Gregg was able to get the TQ by the smallest of margins in Q3, which would set the stage for the final. Gregg would lead most of the race from the tone, but a few flips late in the race would allow the hard charging Dario to get into 1st. On the final lap Dario would have about a 1/2 a straight lead on Gregg but then disaster struck with a collision at the end of the straight which allowed Gregg to sneak by for 1st, which he was able to hold a 1 second lead over Dario in 2nd as they crossed the finish line. While the battle for 1st was raging, a quiet battle for 3rd had been building up. Gordon had a terrible first lap which allowed Derek to take 3rd early in the race. With 3 laps to go Gordon found the pace to make the pass and hold Derek off to finish in 3rd.

4wd SCT B-Main: RESULTS

1st(bump): David Praught, 2nd(bump): Cole Leblanc, 3rd: Mat Leblanc

4wd SCT is a popular class at Cap-Pele, and this race was was a large class this race. The finals were divided into an A & B main. In the B the top 2 finishers would join the A-Main, which is a great reward for doing well in your race. Also in this race we welcomed new racer Gilles Thibodeau to the SCT class. In this race David Praught and Cole Leblanc would have  a slow start with some first lap crashes, allowing Mat Leblanc to momentarily take the lead of the race. A few laps later Mat fell to the 3rd spot. David , cole and Mat would recover and finish 1,2,3 with David and Cole getting the bump to A.

1/8 E-Buggy A-Main: RESULTS

1st(tq): Dario Paoletti, 2nd: Mark McKinnon, 3rd: Derek Bain

1/8 buggy has continued to grow this year and in this race there was a full 7 buggy final. Dario had the hot setup in this race and he  would lead from the start and finish 1st. Mark would have a slight bobble on the first lap that dropped him to 3rd, but he would make a quick recovery to get back into 2nd. He chased Dario through the race but he just didn’t seem to have the grip he needed to make a challenge for 1st. The story of this race was Derek Bain, who had a rough qualifying session to start 6th on the grid. He put his head down in the race and improved on his 6th place start to finish 3rd!

1/8 E-Truggy A-Main: RESULTS

1st: Chris Flewelling, 2nd: William Muirhead, 3rd: Mat Leblanc, (tq): Derek Bain

1/8 truggy had a small turnout, but with 4 registered the race was on! Derek would have a great qualifying session to qualify TQ, but he was unable to start the final with mechanical issues. This gave the remaining 3 drivers a chance at the top spot of the podium. The drivers would get about a 1/3 of a lap spread on each other and they would finish in the order they started with Chris 1st, William 2nd, and Mat 3rd!
